Kenyan Brand Pioneers Inclusive Fashion for the Visually Impaired
In Nairobi, Hisi Studio is breaking new ground in the fashion industry by designing clothing specifically tailored for the visually impaired. Founded by Angela Wanjiku, the brand integrates braille prints and tactile elements into its garments, enabling visually impaired individuals to independently engage with fashion.
Wanjiku emphasizes the importance of inclusivity in design, stating that each piece features braille inscriptions with empowering messages, such as "The less we see with our eyes, the more we see with our hearts." This approach not only addresses a significant gap in the fashion market but also promotes a message of acceptance and understanding.
The World Health Organization reports that globally, 39 million people are blind, with an additional 500 million experiencing visual impairments. In Kenya, approximately 224,000 individuals are blind, and 750,000 have visual impairments. Despite these numbers, the fashion industry has largely overlooked this demographic.
Julius Mbura, a visually impaired lawyer and client of Hisi Studio, shares his experience: "The t-shirt I’m wearing allows me to appreciate fashion in a way I never could before. I can read the messages myself, thanks to the tactile and braille designs, without needing anyone else’s help." His t-shirt features the phrase, "Wade in the water, contend for your future," accompanied by artwork depicting Mount Kenya’s contours.
Hisi Studio sources all materials locally and markets its products through social media and e-commerce platforms. The brand plans to expand by partnering with retail shops nationwide, aiming to make inclusive fashion accessible to a broader audience.
This initiative not only fills a critical void in the fashion industry but also fosters a sense of independence and confidence among visually impaired individuals. By prioritizing inclusivity, Hisi Studio sets a precedent for other fashion brands to consider the diverse needs of all consumers.
