Kenya-China Partnership Accelerates Digital Transformation
On February 11, 2025, Kenyan officials highlighted the significant role of the Kenya-China partnership in advancing the nation's digital economy. Harriette Chiggai, from the Office of the Women Rights Advisor to the President, emphasized that collaborations with the Chinese government and enterprises have been instrumental in developing digital infrastructure across Kenya's 47 counties. A notable example is the memorandum of understanding signed in October 2023 between President William Ruto and Chinese telecom firm Huawei, aiming to promote digital transformation nationwide. This agreement has facilitated the establishment of digital infrastructure and equipped youth with skills for e-commerce and remote work. Gloria Wawira, CEO of the National Youth Council, noted that China's technological advancements offer valuable lessons for Kenya's pursuit of a skills-driven fourth industrial revolution. Initiatives like the DigiTruck, a mobile digital literacy program targeting underserved youth, have been launched in collaboration with Huawei to ensure inclusive participation in the knowledge-based economy.
